Manufacturing continues to be one of Greensville County’s largest industry sectors, although healthcare, retail trade, and education continue to lead the region as a whole. Cost of labor is significantly lower in the Greensville area, with average annual wages of just under $31,000 compared to Virginia’s annual average of just over $50,000.

In recent years, unemployment rates in both the region and Greensville County have averaged higher than in other parts of Virginia and the United States at 7.5 percent, compared to 4.8 percent in Virginia and 6.5 percent for the nation. The regional labor market provides a large, skilled, local civilian labor force of more than 62,000.

Greensville County also provides access to educated and skilled employees, as nearly 75 percent of regional residents are high school graduates. Each year, the region’s public school systems, colleges, and universities provide nearly 9,800 additional labor resources, with nearly half coming from Greensville County and the City of Emporia.
